Samyama Lightness, Lurching, and Levitation

The distinctive cluster of purification symptoms — shaking, lurching, spontaneous "hopping" off the seat, even the appearance of near-levitation — produced by the lightness sutra ("Akasha — Lightness of Air"), the ninth of the standard nine samyama sutras. This is the canonical page for this phenomenon: purification symptoms produced elsewhere in practice are covered at purification symptoms.

Why the lightness sutra does this

The ninth sutra, "Akasha — Lightness of Air", is singled out in Lesson 150 as a mental kundalini technique — it brings significant energy up through the nervous system, more than the other eight sutras typically do. Practitioners with time and strong bhakti can extend samyama by adding five minutes of the lightness sutra (or another preferred sutra) at the end of the standard nine, with the 15-second cycle continuing for those extra minutes — by the clock now, not by counting repetitions. See samyama's self-pacing section for how this extension fits into an overall routine.

A live case

Lesson 155 is a live case of what the lightness sutra actually produces in practice. A practitioner one week into samyama, doing the extended lightness portion on a bed, began shaking and lurching during the release, with arms going up and down; on the next repetition they hopped from one end of the bed to the other and could see it happening in real time. After the session they felt "like every nerve in my body had an enema" — cleaned out.

Common symptoms during lightness samyama: - Panting (automatic bastrika pranayama) - "Hopping" — spontaneous physical lifting/relocating movements of the body - Strong energy currents - Rising energy that feels "very light inside" - Impulse to yell — may or may not manifest

Yogani's framing:

  • This is purification in motion. Karmic debris is being cleaned out in wholesale fashion; the movements are friction between rising energy and obstructions that are being dissolved. That's why it feels good — it's pure bliss consciousness surging through the nervous system.
  • It's not exactly levitation — it's trying to be. The energy surge induces enough lightness that the body lifts, but not stable flight. Over time the movements refine into subtle internal rather than gross external motion — "more energy moving inside and less external indication of it." No extravagant claims of literal levitation are made.
  • Sit on something padded. Pillows or a mattress on the floor is ideal for the lightness sutra. Not primarily for safety (practitioners intuitively sense their location during the practice) but because the bed is more likely to get damaged than the practitioner. Thick padding is sensible.
  • Keep going if it feels good. Make sure to take plenty of rest afterward.

Lesson 155: "Movement and dramatic sensations inside (including ecstasy) are caused by friction in the nervous system as the energy moves through, blowing out the obstructions in large quantities. … That's the great power of samyama. It enables us to systematically purge the nervous system from the inside with relatively little discomfort. Getting purged by using samyama is usually very pleasurable."

This is a live example of the "samyama is samyama-safe" principle: because samyama requires inner silence to work, the energy being released is pure bliss consciousness itself, not raw untransformed kundalini. The cleaning feels pleasurable, the obstructions dissolve, and integration is much easier than with most direct energy practices.

Optional enhanced lightness sutra

Addition 155.2 offers an optional expansion of the standard lightness sutra for practitioners who want to deepen the practice:

"Relationship of Body and Akasha — Lightness of Air"

This expanded form explicitly includes the body-to-akasha relationship that Addition 155.1 identifies as the actual mechanism behind the lightness effect. The body, at its finest level, is akasha (living inner space, alive emptiness); recognizing this relationship through the sutra deepens the purification and opening. The first part of the sutra touches the body-akasha relationship; the second part ("Lightness of Air") releases it into the form of felt lightness.

Yogani's caveat is the same as for everything else samyama-related: the lightness sutra is not mainly about flying. It's about deeper purification at the most subtle levels of neurobiology, which uplifts every aspect of daily life. Levitation as a "siddhi" is scenery; the real benefit is more samyama effect spreading into daily activity.

Addition 155.2 cautions against getting too excited about the powers that can come with daily samyama. The lightness sutra, enhancement included, "is not mainly for 'flying through the sky'" — its purpose is greater overall purification and opening in the most subtle levels of the neurobiology.

Self-pacing

  • If hopping happens, sit on a soft surface (a mattress is ideal). This is real enough that physical precaution is warranted.
  • Keep it in proportion. Let the movement happen within reason, not to a hazardous extreme — the same rule as every other purification symptom. See self-pacing.
  • If the surge feels like too much, reduce or drop the extended lightness portion first before reducing the core nine-sutra routine — it's the most energetically active part of samyama.
  • Take plenty of rest afterward — five to ten minutes lying down, more than the rest time after deep meditation alone.

How it relates to other practices

  • The ninth of the core samyama sutras — not a separate technique, but the most energetically active member of the standard list.
  • A specific instance of purification symptoms — the general "welcome, don't chase, return to the procedure" rule applies here too, alongside the broader catalog of samyama-specific symptoms (expansion, emotions, vibrations, new breathing patterns) covered on that page.
  • Related to kundalini — the movements are "trying to be" levitation because of a real energy surge, but they are refined, silence-mediated purification rather than raw kundalini activation.
