Enlightenment Timeline
How long the three stages take, and how that has changed historically. AYP's answer combines two lessons: Lesson 85 says it varies enormously by individual; Lesson 426 adds that the historical outer bound has been steadily compressing.
It varies enormously, individual to individual
Lesson 85 is honest: some practitioners experience stable rising silence after months. Others meditate for years before silence becomes obviously prominent. Yogani himself meditated for nearly 15 years before significant ecstatic awakening began. Some practitioners experience all three stages overlapping early; others move through them in distinct phases over decades.
The variables: prior practice (this life and earlier), individual nervous system constitution, lifestyle, bhakti intensity, self-pacing discipline, life circumstances. There is no schedule.
The historical compression: lifetimes → decades → years
Lesson 426 tracks a historical shift in the outer bound of the timeline, even though individual variation (above) remains:
- Old days — lifetimes, sometimes thousands.
- 20th century — with applied effort, at least for a few: several decades.
- 21st century — the same arc possibly traversed in a few years. Or at least "putting a major dent in it."
What AYP observes at ~7 years as an open-source teaching: a few years of practice yields "ripeness" — inner silence and ecstatic awakening approaching their joining; 5+ years sees practitioners "falling from the tree" into a stable experience of unity/non-duality.
What determines individual speed: bhakti, prior background, and condition of the nervous system at the deepest level (karma).
Lesson 426: "What we are doing about it in the here and now is infinitely more important than what someone else claims to have done."
The three-stage bar chart
Addition 426.1 introduces a three-stage bar chart: Inner Silence → Ecstatic Conductivity → Unity, each stage relying on the previous. Each continues to refine after the next begins. Corresponding practices: Inner Silence = DM; Ecstatic Conductivity = SBP + mudras/bandhas; Unity = samyama + self-inquiry + karma yoga. All three stages mingle and deepen throughout the journey. Premature kundalini pursued without inner silence is off track.
Don't assign enlightenment status
Addition 426.2 on assigning enlightenment status: don't.
Addition 426.2: "True enlightenment makes no claims. It only does, in a perpetual divine outpouring for the benefit of others in ordinary living."
Enlightenment is a quality of life lived in service, not a rank, and not something to time precisely or award to others.
The practical instruction, regardless of speed
The practical instruction is the same no matter where an individual falls on the timeline: practice daily, self-pace, ground in daily life, watch for this year being better than last year.
